I am fed up with SSA making mistakes. SSA claims they overpaid my friend from disability he received back in the 1990's. He had to re-file for disability in 2008 and was granted in 2011. His lump sum payment would have been substantial. SSA contacted him and claimed that they had overpaid him over $26,000.00 from the previous period and that they would be collecting it. How do they make a $26,000.00 mistake?? Every letter they have sent to him has had a different amount and a different decision. With his many health problems, this has sent him to the edge physically and emotionally. I feel that SSA has made a gross error (as they have probably done with hundreds or thousands of others), and I feel that it is time for them to "eat" their mistake and stop penalizing people like my friend for their mistakes. Perhaps they need to completely overhaul their personnel or limit the number of SSA employees who "have their hand in" someone's case. We have never talked to two people in a row who gave us the same answer. It's just too much confusion and frustration. I am ready to stand up and fight and I believe that SSA should cut its losses, admit its mistake and absorb the expense. My friend did not create this situation but he is paying for it. What avenues can I pursue as an individual to get the ball rolling and call SSA out on the carpet? Unless someone takes a stand and fights back, this will keep happening to people who have enough to deal with concerning their health, disability issues and the emotional and mental stress that comes along with that. My friend could dearly use his lump settlement, as this money situation caused him to lose his residence, and he is now living between a car and a garage because SSA says he STILL owes them money and he keeps getting letters with different amounts that they are going to take out of his monthly check!! What can I do to help him? What can I do to fight this system??
