Should I close my credit card

I am currently up to date on cred. card, but cannot afford pymts, I was on a paymt. plan, but it has exp. and they will not help again for 12 mo.  I contacted Credit counseling and the payments were too high. Will the interest and late fees keep adding up if I personally close my account.  It is currently "suspended" by the cr. card com. but not closed.

You are asking strangers on an internet board to make a financial determination on your behalf.

You say you cannot afford payments and the card has been suspended - you are the one who needs to assess your entire financial picture - income, job security, other financial obligations, living costs and make that determination based on YOUR circumstances.

No one can tell you what to do--you are the one who needs to take control of your finances.

I certainly have done that or I wouldn't have contacted the cr. card co. and consumer counseling--I need to know the repercussions of closing the account and how long can they keep piling up fees to the closed acct.

Credit cards are considered "open accounts" until they are paid in full, and then requested by the owner for the account to be closed.  The account can't be closed as an attempt to stop interest activity.  It will accumulate so long as there is a balance.

About the only option you have is to seek loan from a finance establishment to consolidate outstanding debt to one transaction.  The loan can include a pay off of the credit card, and then you may close it.

Just becuse you close the card does not eliminate the debt that you owe or everyone would be doing it.

Your options can include filing for bankrupcy protection, taking out a consolidation loan, not paying the credit card, paying what you can afford, finding a second - third job to help make up the difference, etc

Filing for BK, not paying what you owe, options like these can seriously impact your credit score and can stay with you for several years.

The only person who can really decide what to do is you. Perhaps you can consult family members to see if they can help you out.

The answer to your question is, yes, the interest and late fees keep accruing after you've closed the account.
