    choosing a lawyer

I'm part of a union and I was injured at work and a co- worker was almost died for this accident. I am being rep. by a union lawyer, but I wanted to know if I can find my own lawyer.  I don't think he has my best intrests in mind because the company told me that they will stop paying for the doctor I am seeing now (he's not under my union health care) and the union lawyer said he would check into it. They suggested I see the company's doctor and they would pay. This is outside of the required exam the company's doctor can legaly do.

You are always free to hire your own lawyer.

    Oppss:

Since you have an attorney I always say make your attorney your first and best source of information regarding your case.

You can terminate your relationship with your attorney at any time.  Since you signed an attorney client representation agreement with your attorney prior to the filing of the claim you agreed to pay the attorney a reasonable fee.  This does not mean that you pay your first attorney 20% and your second attorney 20%.  The maximum attorney fee is 20% total and if you have one attorney or more, the attorneys may divide that 20% at the end of the case.

In Illinois you are entitled to two medical opinions from doctors of your own choosing.
