Adverse drug effect in dog - documented in a vet hospital.

My otherwise healthy young dog (3.5 years old) developed bleeding stomach ulcers upon receiving Metacam after a successful torn ligament surgery and had to be re-hospitalized. Seeking reimbursement for hospital expenses plus damages, directly from the product manufacturer and the lawyers fee. ((The new medication to correct the problem caused by Metacam must be given 7x per day, around the clock).

Since this is a battle with a drug manufacturer - I have no chance to win without legal representation.  What type of attorney do I need, and where to find one in Massachusetts?

I'm sympathetic to your dog's condition, but that's not going to happen.

Metacam is an NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).

Like any users of any NSAID (people or animals) some will have anywhere from minor to serious reactions.

In fact, the Metacam website has the following disclaimer:

    • As a class, cyclo-oxygenase inhibitory NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver side effects. The most common side effects reported in field studies were vomiting and soft stool/diarrhea. These are usually mild, but may be serious. If side effects occur, pet owners should halt therapy and contact their veterinarian. Pets should be evaluated for pre-existing conditions and currently prescribed medications prior to treatment with Metacam, then monitored regularly while on therapy. Concurrent use with another NSAID, corticosteroid, or nephrotoxic medication should be avoided or monitored closely. Please refer to the package insert for complete product information or visit www.metacam.us.

A disclaimer like that means you would be unlikely to ever collect a nickel from the manufacturer.

Millions of people routinely use Ibuprofen, Motrin, and similar NSAIDs, all of which have similar warnings on the packages.

Sorry, but I don't think you have a chance, even with representation.

A products liability attorney. And you can find one by using the search feature to the right, google, or your local yellow pages.

But unless you are willing to pay the attorney 1000 times what your dog is worth (monetarily) you won't likely be finding one that will take the case.
