writing a screenplay from a film in the public domain

i was wondering if i could get myself in trouble for writing a screenplay from a film in the public domain

the film is Too Late For Tears

    it was written in 1949.

i would like to change the characters names and add some new things into the script but the plot will be the same

i haven't wrote it yet as i want to make sure it is ok to do so before i spend the months writing it

    Thanks

No trouble for just writing it. Selling it might be a different story.

Are you sure it's in the public domain?

It's only 60 years. I thought copyright protection was good for 75 years after the death of the writer.

Roy Huggins, the writer, died in 2002.

All the more reason to have legal counsel if you expect to make money on it.
