    DOL OWCP Disability Retirement

Hi, I was hoping somebody can tell me the first steps to take towards applying for Fed OWCP Disability Retirement.  I have searched their website and found nothing.  I have worked many years with work restrictions and now the doctor has said I can no longer work.  I just don't know where to start and afraid to call OWCP without some kind of knowledge of what I am talking about or need to ask for.  I'd appreciate a point in the right direction to gather information.  Thanks!

OWCP will tell you that they are not a disability retirement program.

Essentially, you file a notice of recurrence of disability, form CA 2a and your doctor must write a detailed medical report explaining how your accepted injuries have worsened to the point that you are no longer able to work, even with work restrictions.

    Much easier said than done.

Moreover, even if you get approved, there's a good chance OWCP will require you to go thru Voc Rehab unless your doctor really makes a strong case that you cannot work at all.

You might want to explore filing a disability retirement claim with OPM as a back up.  Might not be as much money, but could be a lot less stressful.  Unless you are CSRS, you also will need to file for Social Security disability as well.  At the very least, it gives you optionsm even if OWCP is approved.

    Re: DOL OWCP Disability Retirement

DOL OWCP doesn't do disability retirement, per se. I would apply for disability retirement through OPM - your agency can (has to, actually) help you out with paperwork. Forms are available online, along with description of what to do. (http://www.opm.gov/for...)  I just did this, and was finally approved for dis retirement - OPM requirements are different from OWCP, and dealing with OPM is much more professional than dealing with OWCP (who are so often adversarial and heartlessly self-serving, in my experience.)
