You're going to need a lawyer and a tax pro eventually, so you'd better resign yourself to incurring that cost as part of the cost of doing business.

But, meantime, the best source of information is a trade association whose members have already been through all this and have compiled the information for the benefit of their members.

There is the Alabama Winemakers and Grape-Growers Association:

I'm doing research to find out how I can legally brew and sell mead in Badlwin County, Alabama. I understand that there is a lot of legal stuff involved, excise taxes and the like.

Short of hiring a corporate lawyer can anyone give advice on what I need to do to at least start on the path to realizing this dream? It will be a small time winery (less than 50k gallons a year, probably more like 100 gals per year to start).

Again, any help or advice is appreciated.
