Can eye doctor have my driver's license revoked in Tennessee

My eye doctor told me it was illegal to drive at night with my eye exam results.  She said it was borderline during the day.  I have cataracs and for financial reasons need to wait until 3/12 to have them removed.  Can she have my license suspended?  Thank you.

Because you do not meet the minimum state requirements for vision, she is required to fill out the TN State Eye Specialist Form outlining your visual difficulties and send it to the DMV.  You will not pass the DMV eye screening and that would trigger a suspension also.

You should also know that once she has informed you that you cannot legally drive with your vision should you get in an accident your insurance company may not cover you for the damages since you are fully aware you cannot legally drive.

You have several options:  see if there is a way to financially have the surgery this year, take public transportation, or continue to drive and pray nothing happens until you get the surgery.

    She can't.

    But the DMV can.

All states have procedures where anybody can report a mental or medical condition to the DMV which results in a DMV investigation which could result in the revocation or limitation of a driver license. Vision impairments are on top of the list for priority investigation and remedial action.

I strongly suggest that you voluntarily eliminate night driving and limit your day driving until you can have your surgery.

Otherwise a suspension or revocation is likely to come at the most inconvenient time and be harder to reverse.

If you wise up and limit your own driving you remain in control.

I got the post pending moderation error again so heaven knows when my first answer will appear but....

    "She can't.

    But the DMV can."

Actually TN is one of the states that requires an eye care provider to send in a specific DMV form when a driver cannot legally drive without corrective lenses, has a visual acuity of insufficient quality, or other eye conditions that prevent legal safe driving.

From an insurance standpoint, if the OP gets in an accident after being informed they are legally unable to drive the consequences can be even more severe than a mere suspension or revocation.

SHe can tell the DMV that you should not be driving. How they respond is not under her control.

Yes, but the DMV then reviews it and decides whether or not to take action. The doctor does not, on their own, suspend the license.

OK, I am now scared to death.  A friend offered to lend me the money and I think I'm going to take her up on it.  Thanks for the information.

You should be scared - of hurting yourself or someone else when you cannot see clearly enough to drive safely.
