Question [=?] Lawyer ratings in California

How do I find out if a lawyer has complaints or a judgment against him or her? Is there some kind of rating system or website for California lawyers?

Go to the California State Bar website for info on attorneys. http://www.calbar.ca.gov/state/calbar/calbar_generic.jsp?cid=10114

"How do I find out if a lawyer has complaints or a judgment against him or her?"

What sorts of complaints? Civil lawsuits are matters of public record. If you're talking about complaints to the State Bar, complaints are not matters of public record. You can use the following link to see if a lawyer has a public record of discipline:

Martindale Hubbell (the company that owns this web site) has a ratings system. I don't think anyone pays attention to it, and I have no idea how one gets a rating (I don't have one, but a number of folks at my firm do). I know I've run across a couple other sites that purport to rate lawyers, but I doubt any are credible. Keep in mind that people rarely should lawyers' praises publicly, but they're more than willing to go public with bad stories, so anything you run across is likely to be seriously skewed toward the negative.
